Valdez, Alaska

After leaving the Kenai Peninsula, we continued on to Valdez, Alaska. We spent one night in Palmer to recharge the batteries and everything in a park with full hookups and then spent one night at a turnout along the road to Valdez.
The scenery on the drive to Valdez was spectacular--with glacier covered mountains and raging rivers and high waterfalls. I think there is a "bridal veil falls" in just about every place that is famous for waterfalls--no exception here.

In Valdez we visited the various museums including the 1964 earthquake museum which resulted in the complete relocation of Valdez. You can no longer visit the oil terminal since 9-11, however you can still see the tankers coming in off in the distance.

The salmon hatchery on Dayville Road was quite interesting with THOUSANDS of "pinks" trying to make it up the river and/or into the fish ladder to the hatchery. Seagulls gorged themselves on salmon as did bald eagles. These birds were so full, they took to eating only the eyes of the salmon and letting the rest of the fish decay.

The night in Valdez was another free, primitive site near the glacier.
