Big Sky Montana

On Tuesday we drove from Custer, SD through Wyoming to Bozeman, Montana--about 550 miles. We stopped for a tour of the Little Bighorn Battlefield (Nat'l Monument) which was surprisingly huge and not as one might imagine from depictions in history books.

The surrounding mountain peaks throughout this portion of the drive were snow covered and the headwind was so fierce we only got 8.98 mpg! Very frustrating with fuel prices (diesel) at $4 per gallon.

We found a tire store in Bozeman and got the trailer tire (slow leak due to a screw in the tire) fixed.

We also found a bike shop and got a set of new tires for my bike and some spare tubes. The bike shop tech said "Boy, you really got your miles worth on these tires!"--they were very worn out. Now hopefully I can stop getting flats and the new tires will be robust enough to crank out the miles on the Alaskan Highway.

We ate a marvelous meal of Thai food at a place recommended by the bike shop and then spent another glorious night in a Walmart parking lot. The place was PACKED with RVs this time!!

  1. We found Walmart supportive of RV'ers and rightly so. "We" have found that we normally spend around $100. each time we seem to stop for a night at one of their locations. However, traveling the U.S. we now use our GPS navigation in the rig to find tel.#'s for their stores and "Call In Advance"....and kind of 'grille' the person on the phone.
Reason is they have on occasion NOT allowed us to overnight because of 'local pressure'.
Great spot for them and us, but call..and we always take time to go into the store, and thank someone in management.

  2. I agree, Ron. Walmart has been very supportive and we always spend $$ and stock up on supplies and things we don't need when we stop :).
They haven't kicked us out yet, but I guess we should start checking.
I like your idea of finding someone on the mgmt team to thank directly in the store. (I was just going to write a letter to Walmart HQ to thank them.)

  3. On our 2004 trip, we had to spend "extra" time around Billings, MT to get a head gasket replaced. We spent a day and a half in Yellowstone before returning to Billings. Because we had lots of time, we spent a good long time at Little Bighorn. It added much depth to the story.
