Well, we've bought all the things we THINK we need to live "off the grid", the provisions are mostly stored, we're freezing the last of the fresh meats, and we hope to be under way on Monday, 6 June. Tomorrow (Sunday, 5 June) we'll be celebrating Dick's 71st birthday (the folks we are staying with here in TN that will be accompanying us in their RV to Alaska--albeit a departure 1 week later), completing the final packing on the truck and trailer, then early on Monday we will head out.
Our first stop will be the RV dealer where we bought the trailer to have the galley sink replaced--the original OEM sink is warped and the sink doesn't drain; a warranty repair. So...we'll leave Kingston, TN about 7:30 a.m. and stop there to have them put in the replacement sink. Once installed, our plan for the first day is a pretty non-aggressive schedule to camp at a Corps of Engineers campground at the "land between the lakes" in Kentucky. Although we have been staying in the trailer, this will allow us to test all of the "off the grid" systems, tighten all of the lugs on the trailer, etc. to ensure all systems are "go" for the big trip.
After that, we hope to average 550-ish miles per day, stopping in South Dakota at Wall Drug, Badlands, Black Hills, and Mt. Rushmore for several days enroute to Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana. We'll likely wait somewhere in the Glacier or Calgary area for Nancy & Dick to "catch up" before heading further north.
Not sure how often we will have internet access, but will post when we can.
My wife and I stopped at Wall Drug on our way to Alaska in Feb 2004. We were actually there for drugs, Tylenol or anti-histamines (I don't remember at this point.) We had come through the Badlands and stopped at Mt. Rushmore afterwards.
